JANUARY 2018

Dear Friends -

It seems I just sent off the December update, and here we are - a month later. I know it is an old saw, but time does fly ever faster. Which is a reminder to not hesitate to act on any of your new year's resolutions... not to rush blindly, but also not to wait unnecessarily.

What does this have to do with music? I don't know, except maybe it is as a nudge to not let pass by the next concert, or the next four concerts, of the Dranoff season.

The first performance is on February 4 at the New World Center. Yes, it is Superbowl Sunday, but our concert is at 2pm to make sure you can enjoy both the Arts and Athletics. A wonderful celebration of voice and keyboard, Duo Chipak & Kushnir perform together with Brad Diamond, James Bass, Amanda Crider and Sarah Braily - the Voices of Seraphic Fire - a program that is both romantic and powerful: Johannes Brahms' Hungarian Dances and the second cycle of the Liebeslieder, as well as Franz Liszt's transcription for two pianos of Ludwig van Beethoven's titanic 9th Symphony. (Details below.)

We are especially delighted to introduce our signature sponsor, Jose Luis Pere and Compass Real Estate. Make sure to meet him at the pre-concert reception, part of the VIP tickets. ( Tickets)

On January 28th, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of PIANO SLAM with a party at Books & Books in Coral Gables. Our partner since the beginning, Books & Books has been integral to the growth and success of the program. Please join us from 5:30pm until 7:30pm to meet some of the alumni, have a glass of something and mingle with other likeminded souls who care about literature, music and supporting our youth. I will send out a reminder a few days before. No tickets needed, just your presence.

On February 8, come be a nerd! Gramps Bar in Wynwood hosts monthly "mini TED talks with beer" as they call it. PIANO SLAM will present a speaker who will talk about Music and the Mind. Check here for specifics.

Preparations for PIANO SLAM 10 have been intense. Last October, we held Professional Development workshops for Miami-Dade Public School educators. Then, in November, 20 live in-school concerts performed by Duo Ping & Ting, Laureates of the Dranoff International Competition. In December, as part of our partnership with the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, hundreds of students released their poems into the sea on drift cards in various locations throughout the county. 2,100 students submitted poems into the PIANO SLAM poetry competition.

Last week was the first round of judging by a group of literature lovers; the next round is adjudicated by published poets. Finalists will be selected by Edwidge Danticat and Campbell McGrath and announced on January 23. They will move forward to work with coaches and then, next month, with the full ensemble under director Tea Alagic to get ready for the big show on February 28.

You see, time flies. Join our flight. I promise, it will be a great trip through the world of music, performance and poetry.

Warmly,

Gabriele Fiorentino
President, Dranoff Board
